July/August 2019

British summertime: longer days, the feeling of the sun on your skin, the smell of freshly cut grass, barbecues, picnics, the seaside, Pimm’s and my absolute favourite part, the Championships at Wimbledon. It’s no wonder us Brits look forward to the sunny season every year, and being the Garden of England, our fabulous county springs to life. So it’s with this image in mind we decided to bring you a roundup of the Kent wedding venues blessed with their own glorious gardens. Check it out on page 29.

In a similar vein, you’ve heard me harp on about what a flower fan I am, so now seemed like the perfect time to indulge the floral craze and discuss wedding blooms. We’ve picked the brains of the county’s passionate florists to offer you some great advice on the finest seasonal selections to bring the best of nature into your nuptials. To find out more, head over to page 73.

I might be a tad biased here, but given the stunning and hugely varied settings our county has to offer during the summer months and the all-around sense of joy we as a nation seem to feel as soon as the sun comes out, it’s no surprise that July and August are still the most popular months in which to tie the knot in the UK. So if you’ve plumped for this period to say “I do”, don’t forget to consult our Hot Topic experts over on page 93; they have the lowdown on creating idyllic seasonal vows.

Happy planning one and all!

Bilsington Priory

Steeped in history, the Grade I listed priory was built in 1253 for the canons regular of St Augustine’s in the French style of the period and once provided hospitality for pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury. Set in seven acres of landscaped gardens surrounded by a mote and fishponds, there’ll be opportunities aplenty for some stunning photographs.

Ceremonies take place in The Grand Ceremony Room, with its Medieval stone and cavernous oak beam structure. Once the refectory for the black canons, it seats 100 guests and has space for a musical quartet. The conservatory, connected to the Edwardian manor house and accessed via a private garden, is surrounded by the mote and overlooks ancient woodlands. It can accommodate 50 of your loved ones. The garden is focused around a chessboard gazebo and is surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, providing a gorgeous setting for al fresco vows. It can seat 120.

Receptions are held in the marquee, which boasts a Louis XVstyle chandelier. Dressed with local Kentish hops, the chapter room hosts a cosy bar and chequerboard dancefloor – this is where evening entertainment takes place, catering for 150.

The west wing of the Edwardian manor is offered for hire to wedding parties wishing to prepare on site. There are four rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis, so there’s somewhere to rest your head at the end of a long day.
