January/February 2022

Your Kent Wedding is 100 and doesn’t it look great for it’s age? That’s right, about to enter our 18th year of publishing, we’re celebrating our 100th issue! I’ve been the editor of this wonderful title since issue 80 and feel incredibly proud to have been part of its history.

The first issue hit the shelves in 2005 with the iconic Kentish landmark, Leeds Castle on the cover and boy have things changed since then! I managed to find a copy in the archives and dusted it off to find that fashions had more in common with the 1990s than they do the 2020s. Designs were all about taffeta, boned bodices and bags of embellishment. Words I hardly hear these days in relation to wedding dresses. What’s more, it was rare indeed to see a groom not sporting a cravat.

However, some things don’t change. Editor Demelza, was explaining to couples that it’s a good idea to select wedding blooms in season at the time of your big day. She said, “In their natural season, flowers are physically stronger (and therefore longer-lasting), their scent is more potent, and their abundance will ensure they don’t cost the earth.” Sound advice and true as it ever was. Themed weddings were as big 17 years ago too. On the news pages, we reported that a couple who tied the knot at The Hop Farm were keen ghost hunters and pulled up to the venue in a dray decorated in witches and ghosts, accompanied by two skeletons and a driver dressed as the grim reaper. So, although personality-filled weddings are huge today, they certainly weren’t something the early noughties couple was afraid of. Plus, Allington Castle featured in our venues focus in issue one, and it makes an appearance here again in issue 100 as the location for our fantastic Disney Fairy Tale Collection shoot.

Your Kent Wedding has been bringing local wedding content to lovely nearlyweds for the best part of two decades, becoming a much valued go-to source of inspiration and advice for many tying the knot in this gorgeous county. We exist to champion the local and very much hope that we can continue to do so for many moons to come. We’d never have reached this ripe old age (still looking so good) without our lovely readers and the county’s amazing suppliers who’ve supported us all these years. A huge thank you to you all.

Here’s to the next 100 issues! And as ever, keeeep planning!

Hayne House

Set near the historical village of Saltwood and the Hythe Coast, Hayne House is an elegant wedding venue nestled within the serene and tranquil setting of an immaculately landscaped private family estate. The combination of traditional county-house charm paired with the modern sophistication of the Orangery make this venue a one-of-a-kind.

Surrounded by a beautiful landscaped English country gardens and fronted by uninterrupted floor-to-ceiling French doors, The Orangery also boasts stunning overhead roof lanterns flooding it with natural light. It provides a natural link to the gardens and every angle of the building is wonderfully photogenic. Built from sustainable materials you can host a wedding here any time of the year in a setting that’s simultaneously flexible, contemporary, stylish and eco-chic.

Say “I do” al fresco under cover of the Garden Pavilion or elsewhere in the gardens, with up to 120 loved ones. Alternatively, during the cooler months, you can opt to exchange vows inside The Orangery, which also has space for 120.

Later on, you can dine in style with a seated wedding breakfast in The Orangery accompanied by your 120 nearest and dearest, and invite an additional 30 to join you for the evening revelries bringing the total guest list up to 150. There are hand-crafted bi-folding doors to separate the dining and ceremony areas if required.

The venue works with Kent-based caterers Scott Anderson, and every booking includes a complimentary food and wine tasting. While a range of inspiring menus is provided, the team will work with you to build the menu around your preferences. A range of fun and different drinks packages are also on offer, such as the gin bar or Kentish drinks selection.

Next to The Orangery is Hayne House, the former hunting lodge once the pavilion of Edward VIII, which has been lovingly restored. Within the lodge there are five en-suite bedrooms, plus the sumptuous honeymoon suite. There’s also another bed and breakfast on site with five further bedrooms, which can accommodate up to 22 guests.

Kasey Clarke, Founder of Sweet Cakey Thing, explains how certain ingredients used in baking can actually be better for your skin compared to some moisturisers, leaving your skin looking hydrated and glowing. We all dreamt of smothering ourselves in cake as a child, yet even then, that sort of behaviour wouldn't go down too well at the dinner table. However, founder of Sweet Cakey Thing, Kasey Clarke, is here to explain why covering ourselves in cake is absolutely a good thing, as long as the ingredients are too. Here, she shares seven baking ingredients, which will help keep skin nourished and hydrated, making your skincare routine a piece of cake, literally.
