Say 'I Do' to sound sleep

As the 2020 wedding season gets underway The Sleep Council has some handy hacks for brides and grooms about to get hitched.

"A great night's sleep will leave you feeling great and looking fab on your big day," says chief advisor Lisa Artis. "Weddings are known to be one of the most stressful life events and worries about it can leave couples struggling to sleep.
"This can have a detrimental effect on the way we look – and bloodshot eyes, dark circles and a blotchy complexion are not what you want on your wedding day. Nothing beats a good night's sleep and a smile to keep you looking your best."

So here's how to say 'I Do' to a great night's sleep the night before the nuptials:
1. Getting a good night's kip – at least six hours – is essential. Feeling stressed about the little things, something not going to plan or being too excited won't help. Create some 'me' time: have a warm bath, listen to quiet music, or do some yoga. These will all help to relax mind and body.

2. Switch off your phone, iPad etc and avoid using social networks. As much as people want to wish you a happy wedding day on Facebook, Twitter and Insta, or by texting/emailing, using technology before bed is proven to hinder sleep. Instead read a book, concentrate on relaxing and enjoy your last night as a singleton.

3. Tempting as it might be, don't succumb to a second hen/stag night on your wedding-eve. Go easy on the alcohol and get an early night – remember it's called beauty sleep for a reason.

4. If you're staying in a hotel or unfamiliar environment, do your best to anticipate what sort of conditions you'll be sleeping in and plan or pack accordingly. You might not be able to entirely eliminate sleep disturbances such as noise and bright lights but being well-prepared can help (think ear plugs and eye masks).

5. Adopt the same bedtime routine as you do at home: use the bed only for sleeping, avoid watching TV or using other technology, steer clear of caffeine and don't exercise just before bed. And if you really can't sleep, don't lie there worrying about it. Get up and do something you find relaxing until you feel sleepy again – then go back to bed.

6. Hopefully you'll spend the night in a comfy bed – an uncomfortable one can rob you of up to an hour's sleep. Remember, a great new bed is a must start way to married life.
