Wedding day washout?

A new survey has revealed the personal disappointments that Brits would like to insure themselves against and adverse weather has topped the list.

More than a third of Brits (35%) say they would consider taking out insurance against bad weather ruining their day, while insurance to protect you from having to stay in a job you don't like came second (17%) and a policy that provides you with a pay out if your relationship breaks up came in third (15%).

The survey, conducted by mobile phone insurance provider Better Buy Insurance, asked UK citizens to name the personal disappointments they would most like to guard against if they could.

Insuring against a bad night's sleep featured high on the list (12%), while taking out a policy to protect you from friends who frequently disappoint was a common choice (11%) and insuring against you not getting the job you want after University scored highly too (10%). Some 7% said they would even insure against having children who don't meet their expectations, which was the same amount as would insure against their sports team losing. More than double the amount of men (11%) as women (4%) would consider guarding against their favourite sports team losing, while almost a quarter (23%) of 25 to 34-year-olds say would take out a policy against a friendship ending, compared to just 3% of those aged 45 or older.

The strange insurance top 10:

  • Weather ruining the day 35%
  • Not liking your job 17%
  • Relationship break-up 15%
  • Bad night's sleep 12%
  • Poor exam results 12%
  • Friend that lets you down 11%
  • Unhappy childhood 11%
  • Bad job after graduating 10%
  • Disappointing child 7%
  • Sports team loss 7%
Better Buy Insurance managing director Lorraine Higham said: “These kinds of insurance policies might seem completely outrageous to us, however, you can already get insurance against a kidnapping, a change of heart for a bride or groom and even for an alien abduction, so they aren't that big a leap.
“What is clear from our research is that there would be a reasonably big appetite for some of these strange insurance types, meaning that things like a bad sleep or a sports team defeat aren't just a minor irritation for many, people would actually be willing to consider a policy to cover themselves.

“Most of us agree that there are few things worse than bad weather ruining a special event, so it's perhaps unsurprising to see that the chance to guard against it happening was a runaway winner!”
