March/April 2022

Who else can’t believe it’s springtime already? It’s such a special time of year and in 2022 we all get to appreciate it so much more given the last two we’ve spent locked up! I’m still coming back down to earth after issue 100 of Your Kent Wedding. It seems strange to be on the other side, but it’s exciting to make a start on the next 100 issues of wedspiration from real weddings and shoots, to expert advice and ideas.

In my own wedding world, bride Melissa has been turning her attention to her best gals and we’ve now got our dresses, if not in our hands then on order. It was a bumpy ride, but thanks to Melissa’s unending patience, we got there. We’re now looking at the even more fun stuff such as accessories, shoes, hair and make-up, which has led myself, my fellow bridesmaids and the bride herself to ponder the matter of just whose job it is to foot the bill for the glam? This in no small part is due to the fact none of us seem able to get the lovely Melissa to take one single penny from us towards it. So, when Fragrance Direct told me they’d teamed up with wedding planer Hannah Rose to discuss just this matter, I was all ears!

Thinking about the glam bill, Fragrance Direct asked Hannah whether it was the nearlyweds’ responsibility to pay for everyone or just themselves? She answered unequivocally, “Definitely everyone. If they’ve asked for people to be part of their day, the majority of the time this will fall to the couple to pay. Otherwise, their loved ones may be put off joining the wedding party. Some bridesmaids and groomsmen might be happy to contribute, but it’s always encouraged that the couple plan this into their budget and offer to pay for the basics such as hair and make-up if they want them to have it done. The cost will vary depending on the hair stylist and make-up artist, but I’d advise to allocate a minimum of £150-£200 per person for anyone who isn’t the bride or groom.”

So, there we have it. We shall immediately cease arguing with the bride and accept her kindness gracefully.

I’ll leave you now to enjoy this issue. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

St Julians

St Julians is an elegant Georgian country house set in charming surroundings just outside Sevenoaks. It has been a secluded and exclusive private club since the early 1950s. Overlooking the Weald of Kent and surrounded by beautiful manicured gardens, the venue offers an unusual yet traditional venue for your big day. In a wonderful setting with breathtaking views across the rolling countryside, the surrounding 70 acres of woodland and landscaped gardens offer an exceptional backdrop.

The Lounge is the original drawing room of the house, with long bay windows that open out onto the flagstone terrace. It boasts a marble fireplace and Steinway grand piano, which is available for you to use on the day. Double doors lead to the Victorian Conservatory, which has an incredible canopy of wisteria blooming fragrantly up to four times a year. The Gallery offers the same views and the bay window is the ideal spot for an intimate wedding ceremony. The venue can host 60 loved ones for the vows.

As well as saying “I do” in The Lounge, Gallery or Conservatory you can also utilise these spaces for your reception. It can host 60 nearest and dearest for a seated wedding breakfast, with up to 80 guests for a standing evening party.

Bespoke menus are planned with the team of experienced chefs and a complimentary menu tasting for you both is available, along with a wine tasting from the venue’s list of house wines. You’ll also have access to the team of professional, highly-experienced wedding planners, who’ll work with you to arrange your bespoke big day. What’s more, social membership of the club is included for you both for one year.

Planning SOS: The flowers

Planning SOS: The flowers

We chatted to Tanya Henton at Stem by Stem about wedding planning and getting started on picking your wedding flowers. We're engaged! Now what?

Get the main things booked before you book a consultation with a florist. It helps to have these elements in place when you talk flowers as the venue will guide the style and placement of floral decorations; the dress will give an indication of the size, shape, style of the bridal bouquet; and the colour of the bridesmaids' dresses and groomsmen's attire generally reflect the palette for the wedding.
