March/April 2023 |
| |
To quote one of my favourite movies, Miss Congeniality, and Rhode Island’s Cheryl, when asked to describe her perfect date: “I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” While hilarious in the context of the film, I do have to agree with her, because she’s perfectly described how I’ve always felt about spring. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I hate, hate, hate hot weather; and while I love the winter, the dark nights can get you down. So, for me spring is the ideal happy medium: not too hot, not too cold. And that’s before we even get started on everything else it brings such as the beauty of new life and the joy of Easter. In short, what a wonderful time of year for a wedding!
We’re particularly blessed in Britain with definition in our seasons so we get to experience spring in all it’s glory where so many countries around world don’t get to enjoy its subtleties in quite the same way. This is when British blooms come into their own. Think of the oh-so on trend loose wildflower style of bouquet bursting with anemones, tulips, sweet peas, narcissi and ranunculus, not forgetting the eternally popular wedding flower, the peony. Aisle runners featuring the same create the ambience of walking barefoot through a meadow and when transferred to the reception tables create that wonderful soft English country garden feel. Why not take inspiration for your wedding palette from the hues found in nature throughout the spring months? Lemon, blush, peach, lavender, sage green... the list goes on. What’s more, 2023’s Pantone colour of the year, Viva Magenta, is so versatile it works beautifully alongside pastels as a bold accent.
I could go on, but I’ll leave it to the local professionals as they share their springtime wedding ideas over in Hot Topic from page 63. Plus, Emily and Dan tied the knot right at the beginning of the season on 2nd March last year, so don’t miss their real wedding feature packed with heaps of inspiration from page 39.
Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Bradbourne House
Bradbourne House is an exclusive-use, Queen Anne, Grade I listed, country house located in the heart of Kent. The house as it stands today was built between 1712 and 1715 and served as the Twisden family home right up until 1937, when it was put up for auction and bought by the East Malling Trust.
The venue boasts 20 acres of picturesque parkland, including a tranquil lake, ancient trees and secret garden orchard. From the moment you drive through the iron gates you’ll find yourself surrounded by pristine, stripey lawns. The grounds are home to a plethora of wildlife, including hundreds of Canadian geese who return to the lake each year.
Brabourne House has two licensed indoor areas for your ceremony. The Drawing Room is ideal for intimate “I dos” with up to 50 loved ones. The bay windows look out across the lakes and gold chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The Great Hall is best for guest lists up to 100 and the blue walls are one of the House’s most memorable features with Twisden family portraits adorning every part.
In addition, there are two further outdoor ceremony spaces, each licensed up to 100. The Hatton Fruit Garden was originally planted as part of the Dig For Victory campaign, and its walled gardens now provide that sought-after secret garden spot where you can exchange your vows. The Great Hall Steps provide the grandest of entrances, and as you ascend the marble steps to the house itself, they offer a spectacular backdrop to the most important part of your day.
The gorgeous Great Hall can also host receptions for 100 seated or 200 standing guests. It allows large numbers of loved ones to come together to celebrate as one, from a decadent wedding breakfast to that all-important evening bash.
For more intimate gatherings you have the option of The Breakfast Room, which provides a different feel. The dark oak interiors and walls hung with portraits is often referred to as the gentleman’s room. Complete with Grand Piano, it’s the ideal setting for intimate meals or relaxing with tea and cake for 40 seated or 100 standing guests. Finally, with space for the same numbers, The Drawing Room’s bay windows are practically made for a wedding cake to sit in!
The venue offers a complementary tasting to the two of your with its executive chef, and a toastmaster is available within the hire to ease your day.
