The top location for weddings was overwhelmingly secular at 44.6% and included aristocratic estates, hotels, manor houses, spas and inns. On the quirkier end of the scale, weddings also took place in a number of zoos, football grounds and even inside a maze. Over 14% of couples chose to get hitched overseas. These statistics for religious and non-religious wedding ceremonies are in line with those released by the Office for National Statistics for 2016, which stated that, for the first time ever, only around a quarter of marriage ceremonies (24%) were religious. When weddings go wrong, the impact can be costly. The average settled insurance claim overall was £1,294. And the highest single insurance claim paid out during 2017 to 2018 was an eye watering £8,963. This was for a wedding which had to be rearranged after heavy snow during the 'Beast from the East' storm in 2018, which prevented guests from making it to the wedding. The unfortunate couple claimed for various costs including the venue, flowers, stationery and photographer.

The Insurance Emporium's Chief Executive Officer, Francis Martin, said: "Your wedding day should be one of the best days of your life but unfortunately the unexpected can and does occasionally happen. Our wedding insurance is designed to provide peace of mind from only £18, leaving you free to enjoy your day without worrying about what could go wrong and how expensive it might be."
